Ice Cube and Tony-winning “Hamilton” director Tommy Kail are teaming for a modern musical take on Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist” for Disney Studios.
The classic Dickens work follows an orphan boy who moves from a life as an exploited child laborer to being under the wings of Fagin, a leader of a gang of London pickpockets. Hardship, murders and secrets waiting to be revealed follow the boy.
Cube and Kwatinetz are writing the treatment, with Cube attached to play Fagin. The new version is described as a modern musical with sources describing it as crossing many genres, including hip-hop. Cube, Marc Platt and Jeff Kwatinetz are producing.
The property has been adapted to the screen numerous times, mostly famously Carol Reed’s 1968 film adaptation of the stage musical “Oliver!” with its notable songs like “Consider Yourself,” “Food, Glorious Food,” “Oom-Pah-Pah” and “You’ve Got To Pick A Pocket Or Two”. Disney previously adapted the property into the 1988 animated feature “Oliver and Company”.
