Bryce Dallas Howard is in talks to play the female lead alongside the already linked Robert Redford in the “Pete’s Dragon” reboot at Disney Pictures. David Lowery is set to direct from a script he co-wrote with Toby Halbrooks.
A reinvention of the 1977 film, the story revolves around Pete (Oakes Fegley) and his best friend Elliot, who happens to be dragon only he can see. The original boasted musical numbers and an animated dragon, the reboot will be a straight narrative and use a CG dragon.
Disney has also confirmed that filming will take place in New Zealand from January to April next year with the production based out of Peter Jackson’s Stone Street Studios in Wellington – the first production to use the facility since the wrapping of “The Hobbit” trilogy.
Shooting will take place around Wellington, Canterbury and the Bay of Plenty.
