How Apple’s Designer Tweaked “Star Wars”

A new wrinkle has formed in the debate over the new “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” lightsaber design and Windows/Android fans may find themselves shifting positions.

It turns out that Jony Ive, the senior vp behind the design of most of Apple’s major products of the past decade including the iPhone, iPad, iMac and recent iOS versions, was consulted on the design of the new look lightsaber.

In a New Yorker profile of Ive, he reveals that was part of “just a conversation” regarding the design but did offer what Abrams called “very specific” suggestions. Ive admits he was NOT the one who came up with the controversial cross guard seen in the trailer.

He was, however, the man behind the rougher look to the light beams: “I thought it would be interesting it if were less precise and just a little bit more spitty.” He also suggested the redesign could be “more analog and more primitive and I think in that way, somehow more ominous.”
