“Highlander” creator Gregory Widen has been brought on to script the action drama “Black Samurai” for Lionsgate, Solipsist Films and De Luca Productions.
The historical tale deals with the Yasuke, the reputed first black-skinned samurai to serve a warlord in Japan in the mid-1500s. Mike De Luca and Stephen L’Heureux are producing.
Yasuke was the only known African to reach that rank in feudal Japan, a slave soldier after the fall of Abysinnian Bengal who found himself in the care of an Italian missionary. On a trip to Japan, Yasuke met Oda Nobunaga who was interested in all Western things.
Through a series of bizarre events, Yasuke embraced samurai culture and became a useful warrior for the warlord.
