The Jim Henson Company has picked up the film rights to filmmaker S. Craig Zahler’s new novel “Hug Chickenpenny: The Panegyric of an Anomolous Child” which hits book stores next month.
Zahler, who has helmed the strongly reviewed and violent cult films “Bone Tomahawk” and “Brawl in Cell Block 99,” will direct the film adaptation of his take on “The Elephant Man” story which has a decidedly gothic vibe.
Jim Henson’s Creature Shop designers will work with Zahler to create and build the animatronic puppet versions of Hug, a hopeful and asymmetrical boy who faces challenges in an orphanage, and the weird and dangerous world outside after he is adopted by an elderly eccentric as a pet.
Zahler, Henson and Dallas Sonnier will also produce. Zahler is currently in post on his cop thriller “Dragged Across Concrete” starring Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn.
