Garrett Hedlund (“Tron: Legacy,” “Inside Llewyn Davis”) is in negotiations to join acclaimed filmmaker Cary Fukunaga’s upcoming TV series adaptation of Caleb Carr’s best-selling novel “The Alienist” for TNT.
“Drive” writer Hossein Amini adapted the 1896 New York City set story in which a New York Times reporter and his former Harvard classmate turned psychologist find the mutilated body of an adolescent male prostitute dumped on the unfinished Williamsburg Bridge.
Newly appointed police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt enlists the two men and a highly capable police department secretary to secretly amass a psychological profile of the man they’re looking for based on the details of his crimes. Their quest takes them into the tortured past and twisted mind of a serial killer.
Fukunaga will executive produce and direct the pilot episode. In related news, “The Guard” filmmaker John Michael McDonagh has revealed to Film Drunk that Hedlund was originally up for one of the lead roles in his new film “War on Everyone,” but ultimately they didn’t get along and so Alexander Skarsgard ended up taking the role instead.
