HBO has renewed its Dwayne Johnson-led, half-hour football comedy series “Ballers” for a second season.
Johnson plays a former football player on a quest to reinvent himself as a financial manager. It also explores the lives of professional football players on and off the field.
The show’s premiere grabbed a respectable 2.2 million viewers in Live+Same Day ratings, but that figure has jumped to 8.9 million viewers across the network’s branded platforms – making it HBO’s most-watched half-hour series pilot since 2009.
In a statement, HBO programming president Michael Lombardo says: “The charismatic and hugely talented Dwayne Johnson, along with the rest of the Ballers cast, has truly struck a chord with the HBO audience. We are thrilled with the overwhelming response the series has received and look forward to another exciting season.”
