HBO certainly loves comedian Danny McBride as, following their collaborations on “Eastbound and Down” and “Vice Principals,” the pair are teaming yet again for another half-hour comedy series.
Titled “The Righteous Gemstones,” the network has given a pilot order for the series about the world famous Gemstone televangelist family, which has a long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work all in the name of Jesus.
John Goodman will star as Gemstone family patriarch Eli Gemstone, a force unto himself in the Ministry game known for his aggressive salvation techniques, worldwide ministries, and an award-winning weekly TV program. He is obeyed, unquestioned, even as his reputation has begun to fade.
McBride will star as Jesse Gemstone, the eldest son and ‘heir to the throne’ who walks in his father’s shadow while simultaneously blazing his own path – a maverick in the ministry game who plans to adapt his father’s style for a more modern audience.
Jody Hill and David Gordon Green will also executive produce alongside McBride.
