Forthcoming streaming service HBO Max has handed out an eight-episode straight-to-series order for “Circe” based on Madeline Miller’s best-selling novel.
A modern spin on the famed character from Homer’s “The Odyssey,” Circe is told from the powerful feminist perspective of the titular goddess who transforms from an awkward nymph to a formidable witch – one able to challenge gods, titans and monsters alike.
The series is expected to deal with her crossing paths with figures including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and of course – Odysseus.
Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (“Planet of the Apes,” “Jurassic World,” “Mulan”) will write and executive produce the drama which is being produced by Chernin Entertainment and Endeavor Content.
The series joins the increasing line-up of scripted originals for the service which also includes “Dune: The Sisterhood,” the Kaley Cuoco-led thriller “The Flight Attendant,” an animated “Gremlins” prequel and more. Scripted and original programming will roll out in 2020 for HBO Max.
