The History Channel has announced today that the network has greenlit production of “The Hatfields and The McCoys”, a new scripted miniseries to premiere in 2012.
Coinciding with the 150th anniversary of America’s most infamous family feud, the story follows the two families who were a part of the first settlers in Tug Valley. The wealthy Hatfields lived on the West Virginia side and mostly fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War. The McCoys lived on the Kentucky side and fought with the Union.
The dispute between the families led to several killings between them, peaking with the death of Randolph McCoy’s wife and two children in 1888. Kevin Costner will star as “Devil” Anse Hatfield and produce the project along with Leslie Greif’s Thinkfactory Media.
The project is not to be confused with the Eric Roth-penned film of the same name in development at Warner Bros. Pictures that had “Crazy Heart” director Scott Cooper and actor Brad Pitt attached to it at this time last year.
