Hasbro has reportedly filed documents to the United States Patent & Trademark Office for a new GoBots trademark under “distribution of motion pictures, ongoing television programs” and “toys, games and playthings, namely, toy vehicles and accessories for use therewith” according to Transformers news site TFW2005.
GoBots were a toyline and Hanna-Barbera animated series in 1980s, kind of a less well known but still popular “Transformers” clone that was produced by Tonka. In 1991, Hasbro purchased Tonka and with it the rights to the Gobots franchise.
The report suggests that Hasbro may hope to reboot the franchise in the same way it has successfully turned its properties into profitable live-action movies including “Transformers,” “G.I. Joe,” “Ouija” and the upcoming “Jem and the Holograms” film. Another alternative is that a new animated series reboot of the property may be in the works.
