Following on from that one-off revival special last year, Adult Swim is breathing new life into the “Harvey Birdman” franchise and has handed out a series order for “Birdgirl,” a spin-off featuring Paget Brewster reprising her role which she played in nine episodes of the original.
In the news series, Judy Ken Sebben (aka Birdgirl) struggles to find a way to balance her work and superhero lives after being named CEO of the world’s largest and most nonsensical corporation – the law firm Sebben & Sebben which is staffed mainly by former superheroes turned lawyers.
With her assembled Birdteam, they attempt to bring the company into the modern times by day and by mid-afternoon they must help defuse a lot of bad situations, many of which they also may have caused.
The original “Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law” was born in 2005 and ran for 39 episodes – scoring major acclaim along the way. It revolved around the titular winged hero turned criminal defense attorney who often protected Hanna-Barbera cartoon characters in legal trouble – Scooby Doo getting busted for marijuana possession, Yogi Bear’s offsider Boo Boo being a potential domestic terrorist, and Fred Flintstone up for racketeering charges as the head of an organised crime gang.
Original series Michael Ouweleen and Erik Richter return for the follow-up, executive producing with Christina Miller. Rich Ferguson-Hull, who helmed most of the original run, returns for the spin-off. If other potential cast members like Gary Cole, Stephen Colbert, John Michael Higgins or Peter MacNicol will return it is not yet clear.
