Hardwicke, Rodriguez Up For “Miss Bala” Remake

Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”) is the frontrunner to star and Catherine Hardwicke (“Lords of Dogtown,” “Twilight”) is in talks to direct a remake of “Miss Bala” for Sony Pictures.

A new take on the Mexican film that was nominated for Best Foreign Film in 2011, the story follows a beauty pageant contestant who witnesses the brutality of a drug gang and is dragged into their dangerous business.

The aim is to score a star quickly for the project, but Rodriguez hasn’t signed on as yet. Hardwicke has separately been circling a film based on Norton Juster’s 1961 kid’s book “The Phantom Tollbooth” at TriStar, though if Rodriguez is secured then this will move quickly forward.

Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer is adapting the script while Kevin Misher and Pablo Cruz are producing.
