Sundance TV has renewed the darkly comic 1980s-set Southern noir series “Hap and Leonard” for a third season of another six episodes.
Based on the book series by Joe R. Lansdale, the story follows lifelong best friends – East Texas-born Hap Collins (James Purefoy) who has a penchant for Southern ladies, and gay black Vietnam vet Leonard Pine (Michael K. Williams) who has a hot temper.
The third season will take inspiration from the novel “The Two-Bear Mambo”. Due to the nature of the series, it’s dubbed an ‘anthology’ as, beyond the two central characters and a mystery element, the side characters and plot change-up with each season.
On airing, the first two seasons have been the highest-rated original series on the cable network.
