It is arguably the best new non-cable series of the past season, and now NBC has officially renewed its acclaimed drama “Hannibal” for a thirteen episode second season.
The series is based on the characters from Thomas Harris’ novel “Red Dragon” and was developed for television by writer and executive producer Bryan Fuller.
The entire cast, including actors Hugh Dancy, Mads Mikkelsen and Laurence Fishburne, are all expected to return.
While the show has already scored a loyal fan base and critical acclaim, ratings for the series have not been good for a major broadcast network.
The show has averaged a decent 4.7 million viewers and a 2.0/6 rating including seven days of DVR use, though its overnight ratings in the U.S. have been fairly dire (it’s a show that most don’t watch live).
That said, the show is proving very popular in high-income households, and has a median audience age of 45.7 – the youngest-skewing drama on three of the major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC).
The production model of the show, made in conjunction with Gaumont International Television and Sony Pictures Television Networks, means the license fee for the network is only a fraction of the cost of that of dramas with similar movie quality production values.
The show has also been a strong ratings performer in other markets all around the world. Had NBC not picked it up, at least one cable network was keen to take it on while Amazon reportedly expressed serious interest in doing so as well.
The new season is expected to go to air sometime in early 2014.
