Armie Hammer and Lily James are set to lead a new adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s classic gothic novel “Rebecca” for Working Title Films and Netflix.

Hammer will re-team with his “Free Fire” director Ben Wheatley on the project in which James will play the second Mrs. deWinter, a young woman who has married a rich, handsome, cold and fascinating widower Max De Winter only to find out that she must live in the shadow of his former wife, Rebecca, who died under mysterious circumstances several years earlier.

She must also deal with the jealous, obsessed housekeeper Mrs. Danvers who will not accept her as the mistress of the house. The property was previously adapted for the big screen in 1940 by Alfred Hitchcock as his first American studio picture. It not only scored much acclaim but won numerous awards including a Best Picture Oscar.

Filming on the new adaptation begins next year.
