“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” took in an estimated $22.2 million for its 3,003 midnight screenings on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, and a further $36 million throughout Wednesday bringing it to a $58.4 million first day.
That midnight number beats the record of $18.5 million held by “The Dark Knight”, $16.9 million by “Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith” and $16 million by this year’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”.
However on opening day numbers it came in fourth, notably behind “The Dark Knight” with $67.2 million and the ‘Transformers’ sequel with $62.0 million.
The previous film, ‘Order of the Phoenix’, took in $44 million on opening day and around $140 million in its opening five days. The question now is will ‘Half-Blood Prince’ be able to reach the $200M mark by the end of Sunday.
Helping it along are the great reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes it scored 87% and 7.3/10 (third highest of the franchise behind ‘Azkaban’ and ‘Goblet of Fire’), while on Metacritic it scored 80/100 and 7.9/10.
