Comedian Melissa McCarthy is closing a deal to star with “Girls Trip” breakout Tiffany Haddish in the gritty mob drama “The Kitchen” at New Line Cinema and DC Entertainment.
Based on the 2014 Vertigo comic book series by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle, the Irish mafia story is set in Hell’s Kitchen, New York in the 1970s. An FBI sweep catches mob leaders, and while they are under arrest and their criminal enterprise is jeopardized, the mob wives take over. They end up running the illicit business in more vicious fashion than their husbands ever did.
The project boasts three strong female leads in the anti-hero roles and, despite the two actresses being known for the comedic talents, is a straight-up drama which marks the directorial debut of “Straight Outta Compton” scribe Andrea Berloff. Michael De Luca is producing.
