“Girls Trip” star Tiffany Haddish is in talks for the lead role and “Crazy Rich Asians” breakout Awkwafina is being considered for her co-lead in a new female-driven take on the “21 Jump Street” franchise at Sony Pictures.
Phil Lord & Chris Miller reinvented the iconic early 1990s TV series as two buddy cop comedy films which starred Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. The new take will see Haddish posing as a high school teacher and the mother of a new student at the school who also happens to be an undercover cop as well.
Awkwafina is the top choice to play the younger cop, but is not in active negotiations for the role and it’s expected it will likely go to a younger actress to fit in with the premise.
“22 Jump Street” writer Rodney Rothman is both directing and retooling a script previously worked on by “Broad City” scribes Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs and producers Lizzie & Wendy Molyneux (“Bob’s Burgers”).
