Gyllenhaal, McGregor Up For “Doctor Strange”

A shortlist of the actors being considered to play the title character in Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” has gone up at Variety.

Newly revealed contenders Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal, Oscar Isaac have joined the previously rumored likes of Ewan McGregor, Jared Leto and Ethan Hawke for the role of Dr. Stephen Strange – a surgeon who becomes the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Sorcerer Supreme”.

McConaughey’s schedule may be a big issue, Gyllenhaal is “quite interested”, Leto is said to be “aggressively pursuing” the role, Isaac was shortlisted following Marvel execs viewing his work on scenes from the next “Star Wars” film, and Hawke is said to still be in the hunt.

Joaquin Phoenix had been in talks for the role since July but dropped out of negotiations the other week. An announcement about who has won the role is expected in the very near future.
