Jake Gyllenhaal and Benedict Cumberbatch are in talks to star in “The Current War,” a new historical drama which Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”) is in discussions to direct for The Weinstein Company.
Playwright-screenwriter Michael Mitnick’s Black List script is set in the late 1880s and revolves around power titans Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse’s battle over electric power transmission systems – the former supporting direct current (DC), the latter alternating current (AC).
In this take, Westinghouse (Gyllenhaal) is the leading man with Edison (Cumberbatch) as the rival in the famed ‘War of Currents’ which went beyond commercial competition into an all-out propoganda war.
Gomez-Rejon will reportedly make this his next film after directing the Will Smith-led “Collateral Beauty” in the Fall. Timur Bekmambetov, Steve Zaillian and Garrett Basch will produce.
