Guess Who Nearly Played Luke Cage & Batman?

Actors aren’t inclined to talk about the “roles that got away,” on occasion though you do hear about them. Recently, two actors have spoken about comic book heroes they were lined up to play years ago. In one case the project failed to come to fruition, in the other the actor didn’t think he was right for the role.

The first of these was Jamie Foxx. Speaking with IGN, he revealed he could’ve possibly played Marvel hero Luke Cage “back in the day,” but ultimate things didn’t work out.

Foxx was likely referring to the John Singleton directed adaptation that was in development at Sony Pictures. Ultimately it didn’t take off and the rights reverted back to Marvel Studios where it is being prepped to become a direct-to-Netflix series.

The other is Pierce Brosnan. Participating in a Reddit AMA this week, the former James Bond revealed that years ago he met with director Tim Burton to play Batman for his 1989 film. The actor turned it down because at that time the only screen take on the character people were familiar with was the campy 1960s show:

“I went and met with Tim Burton for the role of Batman. But I just couldn’t really take it seriously, any man who wears his underpants outside his pants just cannot be taken seriously. That was my foolish take on it. It was a joke, I thought. But how wrong was I?

Don’t get me wrong, because I love Batman, and I grew up on Batman. As a kid in Ireland, we used to get our raincoats and tie them round our neck and swing through the bicycle shed.”
