While not a hell of a lot about “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is known at this point, even just a fortnight before release, there’s even less known about Rian Johnson’s sequel “Star Wars Episode VIII” which is currently slated for a Summer 2017 release.
Today though, The Los Angeles Times has revealed that at least one key character from ‘Force’ not only survives the film but will continue on in the sequel – someone not discussed as potentially coming back before.
POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD
The news piece, a celebratory profile of the women in ‘Force Awakens’, says that Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy has big plans for the chrome Stormtrooper villainess Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie). So much so that the character will carry on into the next movie.
Kennedy says: “She’s an important character, a baddie in the best sense of the word.” She wasn’t the only one gushing about the character either as Abrams himself says that Christie’s performance is his favorite one in the film:
“I can only say that Gwendoline Christie is my favorite. She just killed it. You think, ‘Well, what? It’s wearing a costume.’ But it’s a lot to wear and to have a performance when you’re wearing that requires a different kind of skill set and an additional talent, and she’s got it. It’s an incredible thing to work with her. I am glad that a character has been designed that is visually as stunning as that is, because she deserves it and the fans do too. When I first saw that design my mind was blown because it looked so undeniable.”
“Star Wars Episode VIII” is scheduled to open May 26th 2017.
