“Guardians Vol. 2” Bows To $101M Overseas

Though it doesn’t open until this coming Friday States-side, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” launched in 37 markets this past weekend and got off to an excellent start with a $101 million haul from those markets – 57% ahead of the first film.

It wasn’t the only films making headlines internationally this weekend as Universal’s “The Fate of the Furious” has now reached a global total of $1.06 billion. The eighth film in the series also dominated the domestic market, coming in first once again with $19.4 million and with a North American total of $192.7 million.

Domestically the big surprises were a pair of unexpected newcomers – “How to be a Latin Lover” and “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” which came in second and third with considerable $12 million and $10.1 million hauls respectively. The latter scored an insanely good $23,855 per screen average from over 400 cinemas.

The Emma Watson, Tom Hanks and John Boyega-led “The Circle” came in fourth with $9.3 million, while “The Boss Baby” rounded out the top five with an additional $9 million.
