All the main cast members of Marvel and Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” have united to issue a statement regarding James Gunn’s firing earlier this month following some old transgressive joke tweets by the director being unearthed and published by a high-profile conservative blogger.
Though one or two cast members have tweeted some immediate reactions, the below statement marks the first definitive statement of support from many of the Guardians including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Pom Klementieff and Michael Rooker.
While the cast doesn’t endorse the jokes that were the source of all the controversy, they accept the series of apologies Gunn has made for them over the years and go on to say Gunn has been nothing but a pleasure for the members of the cast and they’re all saddened by the series of events that led to his dismissal.
They also plead to fans to not make knee-jerk judgements: “There is little due process in the court of public opinion. James is likely not the last good person to be put on trial. Given the growing political divide in this country, it’s safe to say instances like this will continue, although we hope Americans from across the political spectrum can ease up on the character assassinations and stop weaponizing mob mentality.”
The cast does not make any demands regarding their involvement in the upcoming “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” including a potential walkout should Disney not re-hire Gunn. Here’s the statement in full:
