WarnerMedia has announced that they’ve handed out a ten-episode series order for “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai,” a half-hour animated prequel series to the original 1984 live-action “Gremlins” movie.
Amblin Television (“Animaniacs”) and Warner Bros. Animation have reportedly been at work on the projects for months already after getting an informal green light. The series will be a part of the upcoming WarnerMedia streaming service.
The animated TV adaptation, written by Tze Chun, tells the original story of the shop owner Mr. Wing and is set in 1920s Shanghai during his childhood. The series reveals how ten-year-old Sam Wing met the young Mogwai called Gizmo.
Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, they take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore on their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure.
At the same time, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins. Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey and Sam Register will executive produce.
Other WarnerMedia series orders handed out recently have included “Dune: The Sisterhood,” “Station Eleven,” “Made For Love,” “Tokyo Vice” and “Love Life”.
