“Grand Theft Auto V” Breaks Profit Record

Rockstar Games’ “Grand Theft Auto V” has broken a record – it has become the most profitable entertainment product of all time, making more money than any other movie, book, or video game ever released.

The open world crime saga was released back in 2013, at the tail end of the last generation of gaming, and immediately scored raves as one of the (if not the) best games in the well-known franchise. It then jumped to PC and current gen consoles and scored further sales.

In fact, in the nearly five years since its release, the game has maintained a permanent presence in the bestseller listings and Market Watch reports that with 90 million copies of the game having been sold, its overall sales now apparently surpassing the $6 billion mark.

To put that in comparison, the best selling single game of the “Call of Duty” series, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3,” sold 26.5 million copies. In terms of nearest competitors, the films “Star Wars” and “Gone With The Wind” stand at approximately $3 billion apiece adjusted for inflation.

Rockstar Games is set to release “Red Dead Redemption 2,” its biggest title since GTAV’s release, later this year.
