Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s hitRECord Films label and Amazon Studios are teaming for “K Troop,” a post-Civil War set film about the rise of the controversial white supremacist group the Ku Klux Klan.
Gordon-Levitt will produce and potentially star in the film which follows the early rise of the KKK in the American South in 1865. The U.S. Army’s elite K Troop stomped out the group in 1871 and managed to bury it until it rose again in 1915 followed by a third incarnation in the 1950s.
Gordon-Levitt would star as Major Lewis Merrill, the enigmatic and strategic leader of K Troop who built an sprawling network of informants to piece together the secretive workings of the KKK.
A writer is currently being sought to adapt an upcoming Slate article by Matthew Pearl into the film’s script.
