Independent Spirit Awards
“Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” dominated the indie film awards on Friday night, taking home Best Feature, Best Director, Best Actress (Gabourey Sidibe), Best Supporting Actress (Mo’Nique) and Best First Screenplay.
Jeff Bridges took home Best Actor for “Crazy Heart”, Woody Harrelson scored Best Supporting Actor for “The Messenger”, Best Screenplay went to “(500) Days of Summer”, “An Education” was Best Foreign Film, “Anvil! The Story of Anvil” won Best Documentary, and “A Serious Man” scored the Robert Altman Award.
Much of the buzz though was dominated by Ben Stiller’s presentation of the Best Film award which took a swipe at the current state of indie film, and threw in some ‘independent porn stars’ writhing on stage. That can be seen below.
Celebrating the worst in cinema of last year, The Razzies handed the Worst Picture of 2009 award to “Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen” which also won for worst director and script.
“Land of The Lost” won worst non-original work, while worst acting nods went to Billy Ray Cyrus (“Hannah Montana”), Sienna Miller (“G.I. Joe”), the Jonas Brothers (“Jonas Brothers 3D Concert Experience”) and Sandra Bullock (“All About Steve”).
The talk of the night though was that Sandra Bullock showed up to accept her award with a crateload of “All About Steve” DVDs and quite brilliantly skewered the awards themselves in a good-humoured acceptance speech.
