Original Japanese Godzilla studio Toho Company Ltd. has announced that they have begun production on a feature-length animated film simply titled “Godzilla”.
Set for release next year, this will be the first animated film featuring the iconic monster and will be produced with Polygon Pictures. Kobun Shizuno (“Detective Conan”) and Hiroyuki Seshita (“Knights of Sidonia”) are co-directing from a screenplay by Gen Urobuchi (“Psycho-Pass: The Movie”).
Shizuno says in a statement: “We’re aiming to make a big-scale animation entertainment that people who love Godzilla and people who know nothing about him can both enjoy.” An official site for the film is already up and contains some production art.
The film follows on from the release of the latest Japanese live-action film “Shin Godzilla” (aka. “Godzilla Resurgence”) later this year in global markets, and before the sequel to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Hollywood reboot which is currently targeting a March 2019 release.
