When the Comic-Con trailer hit for Michael Dougherty’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” in July, it made itself known that this will be a monster rock-em-sock-em mashup with Godzilla taking on three villains – King Ghidorah, Mothra and Rodan – all in one outing.
Speaking with Bloody Disgusting), Dougherty says the aim was to change things up from the 2014 film which teased out its monster reveals. This time out, they’re not keeping anything aside for the next one:
“We have a lot of monsters. I think Gareth [Edwards] had a lot of fun playing cat-and-mouse and I love the slow-build he created. But we definitely take the gloves off for this film. No holding back.”
The sequel takes place five years after the events in the first film and these ancient super-species – thought to be mere myths – rise again and battle for supremacy and leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
Zhang Ziyi, Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Bradley Whitford, Ken Watanabe, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance and Aisha Hinds star in the film opening May 31st 2019.
