“Godzilla” Heads For $230M Global Opening

Godzilla Heads For 230m Global Opening

Overcoming mixed reviews, Michael Dougherty’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” is set to have a monstrous sized opening at the box-office.

The sequel to 2014’s “Godzilla” is expected to earn $50-55 million during its first three days in theaters in North America, with some predicting it could go as high as $70 million.

Overseas it’s going to go even better, with a further $180 million bow around much of the world including Japan and China – taking its opening weekend global haul to $230 million. The film reportedly came in at a budget of $170 million so it needs to earn around a half billion in order to start making profit – especially with overseas providing so much of its coin.

Domestically the giant beastie goes up against the Elton John fantasy musical biopic “Rocketman” which is nabbing strong reviews and is headed for a $20-30 million start, and the Octavia Spencer-led horror film “Ma” which is expected to make between $18-22 million.

Both those titles are expected to come in under the second weekend of Disney’s “Aladdin” which could nab anywhere from $36-45 million in its second weekend outing in North America.
