This year’s “Jupiter Ascending” has arrived. The Gerard Butler-led $140-million sword-and-sandal fantasy feature “Gods of Egypt” is looking to flop hard on opening. The first box-office estimates suggest the film is headed for an opening of just $12 million this weekend.
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer claims that the studio’s exposure was under $10 million thanks to pre-sales of foreign rights and Australian tax incentives. Reviews have been dismal with the film pulling in a woeful 23/100 on Metacritic.
‘Gods’ is set to top the other two wide openers this weekend, inspirational sports drama “Eddie the Eagle” and cop heist thriller “Triple 9” which both cost around $20 million each and both are set to open with around $6-7 million each for the weekend.
“Deadpool” is expected to easily remain on top this weekend for a third weekend in a row, with an estimated $30 million.
