Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn (“Bronson,” “Valhalla Rising”) will shoot the neo-Western “Only God Forgives” this Summer in Asia reports The Playlist.
As previously reported, the story follows a Thai police lieutenant who settles his rivalry with a gangster in Thai boxing matches. Refn will pen, produce and direct the feature.
The news is surprising as back in February Refn revealed he had chosen the Ryan Gosling-led crime-noir “Drive” as his next project and dropped out of two high-profile films to do it – “Jekyll” with Keanu Reeves” and “The Dying Of The Light” with Harrison Ford.
“Drive”, about a stunt driver who moonlights as a getaway driver, was supposed to shoot before ‘God’ which would’ve filmed later in the year. Now it seems ‘God’ will come first as Gosling is currently busy filming a Steve Carrell comedy.
It’s unsure if Refn will still pursue “Drive” or if it will drop off his list like those other two projects as he had previously committed to film “I Walk with the Dead” in Miami.
IFC Films will release Refn’s viking drama “Valhalla Rising” on June 4th.
