Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”) is in talks to star alongside Mark Wahlberg in “Deepwater Horizon” for Lionsgate reports The Wrap.
The true story tale deals with the 2010 BP oil rig explosion that killed eleven crew members and resulted in the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history. Wahlberg plays Mike Williams, an electrician on the rig.
Rodriguez will play the female lead, Andrea Fleytas, who was overseeing the oil rig’s navigation machinery when she noticed that no one had issued a distress signal. After she tried to contact the Coast Guard, she was reprimanded for her actions.
Rodriguez reportedly beat out Kristen Stewart for the coveted role in the film which Peter Berg is directing from a screenplay by Matthew Michael Carnahan. The film is expected to go into production relatively soon to meet its September 2016 release date.
