One of the architects of the “X-Men” franchise moving forward, writer/producer Simon Kinberg, popped up at the Saturn Awards recently where That Hashtag Show gang spoke to him about the status of the next few films in the series.
First up, where are things right now? “The first thing up, we’re shooting the Wolverine movie right now and we start shooting Deadpool 2 at the beginning of next year, then I sit down and start writing the next of the mainline X-Men movies.”
Director Tim Miller, screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and actor Ryan Reynolds are all returning for the “Deadpool” sequel which hasn’t set a specific release date yet but will likely debut early 2018.
Meanwhile there’s the Channing Tatum-led “Gambit” which was delayed a few times and ultimately is slated to get in front of the cameras sometime next year. Kinberg says the project is still very much alive: “We have a great script on that and hope to shoot that movie at the beginning of spring of next year.”
Liman is expected to direct two films before “Gambit”.
