Gabriel Basso (“The Kings of Summer,” “The Whole Truth”) has been set for the lead role of J.D Wade in Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy” film at Netflix. Vanessa Taylor (“The Shape Of Water”) wrote the script based on the acclaimed book by J.D. Vance.
The book is a critically revered account of growing up in Kentucky’s Rust Belt and a personal analysis of the white underclass, race and privilege in America.
Supported by his larger-than-life grandmother (Glenn Close), J.D. (Basso) developed a deep appreciation for education that laid the foundation for him to rise out of poverty and its cultural restraints. Amy Adams is also onboard as J.D.’s mother.
Netflix will fully finance the $45 million film which Howard will also produce with Brian Grazer and Karen Lunder.
