Universal Pictures is in the process of gaining permission to shoot scenes for the upcoming “Furious 8” in Cuba, the first Hollywood studio film to shoot in the country since the 1960s says Variety.
Principal photography on the film will take place in New York and Atlanta, with THR adding that two other possible locations for the film currently under consideration are Russia and Iceland. Previous locations for the series include Los Angeles, Miami, Tokyo, London, Rio de Janeiro and Abu Dhabi.
Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson, Kurt Russell, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges, Elsa Pataky and Lucas Black are all expected to reprise their roles in the F. Gary Gray-directed eighth installment in the series, the first of a new trilogy to close out the series. It is slated to open April 14th 2017.
“Furious 8” might be the first studio production to shoot in Cuba since the 1960s, but won’t be the first production to do so as Showtime’s “House of Lies” will shoot an episode of its fifth season in Havana – the first time an American scripted series will be shot in the country since the restoration of diplomatic relations last summer.
