The first tracking numbers for April are in and Universal’s “Furious 7” is racing towards one of the biggest box office debuts in recent times.
Early estimates have the seventh chapter in the popular franchise, and the last to include series co-star Paul Walker, heading for a North American domestic box-office opening weekend of between $110-115 million. In comparison the previous film, “Fast and Furious 6,” opened to $97.4 million in its first three days in May 2012.
Last year only one film opened above $110 million – “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1”. The current April record holder is “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” with $95 million.
“Fast and Furious 6” pulled in around $788 million worldwide, if it goes well – could this be the first entry in the series to top a billion?
