Antoine Fuqua (“The Magnificent Seven,” “Southpaw”) has signed his Fuqua Films to a first-look deal with the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, a deal beginning with “The Equalizer” sequel to begin production this Fall.
The follow-up will mark the first sequel that either Fuqua or star Denzel Washington have ever made and will see Washington once again take on the role of Robert McCall first made famous by Edward Woodward in the iconic 1980s TV series.
Fuqua will also bring to Sony several percolating projects, including a film about Black Panthers revolutionary Fred Hampton – the deputy chairman of the national organization.
Hampton was assassinated while sleeping at his apartment during a raid by the Chicago PD and FBI in December 1969, with his death later ruled a justifiable homicide. Chris Smith has written a script, based on the Jeffrey Haas’ book “The Assassination Of Fred Hampton”.
“The Equalizer 2” will be released on September 14th 2018.
