Alcon Entertainment has secured exclusive rights to produce a new fully CG-animated feature based on the comic strip “Garfield” which would likely be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
The Garfield comic strip debuted in 1978 and follows a cynical and lazy orange cat and his interactions with owner Jon Arbuckle and fellow pet Odie, a dog. Garfield currently holds the record for being the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world with an estimated readership of 260 million.
The company acquired the rights from Jim Davis, creator of the Garfield comic series, who will also serve as an executive producer. Alcon’s Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove along with Steven P. Wegner and “Despicable Me” series producer John Cohen will all produce.
