Twenty years on, NBC’s iconic 1990s sitcom “Friends” is still very popular and has found whole new life on streaming services.
As a show it was famous for four of its six key characters becoming two couples during its run – Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) along with Chandler (Matthew Perry) and Monica (Courteney Cox). The other two though – Joey (Matt LeBlanc) and Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) never coupled up.
This was kind of fitting for their characters who were less relationship-centric and much more open to casual sex and romantic flings than the other four. Yet in a new interview with People, LeBlanc said that toward’s the show’s end they came up with the idea that Joey and Phoebe had been ‘friends with benefits’ throughout the show’s entire run:
“Towards the end we actually pitched the idea that Joey and Phoebe had been having casual sex the entire time. We’d go back and shoot all the historical scenes and just before a moment that everyone recognizes, there’s Joey and Phoebe coming out of a broom closet together. But they were like, ‘Nah.'”
Both Kudrow and LeBlanc are nominated for this year’s Emmy Awards for their recent TV work.
