Freeform has announced that they have begun development of the hourlong drama “Motherland,” a TV series boasting a unique premise.
The story is set in an alternate America where witches ended their persecution three centuries ago by cutting a deal with the U.S. government to fight for their country. Set in contemporary times, the story will follow three young women conscripted to receive basic training in combat magic at a base called Fort Salem.
Over the course of the series we’ll follow them from both through training and early deployment using supernatural tactics and weapons. In this world, women are the ones that make up most of the front lines fighting looming terrorist threats.
Eliot Laurence (“Welcome to Me”) penned the pitch with Adam McKay, Will Ferrell and Kevin Messick executive producing.
