The inevitable day has arrived. FOX has become the first broadcast network to officially drop Live + Same Day (i.e. overnight) Nielsen ratings.
Network chairmen/CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman announced the change in an internal memo, saying: “Looking ahead, we’re going to stop circulating the Nielsen Live + Same Day ratings, both internally and to press. We will not acknowledge them for any programming other than live events.”
The move comes as more and more TV viewing is being pushed beyond series’ original telecasts via DVRs, on-demand channels or streaming through digital platforms like Hulu, FOX Now, iTunes and Amazon. Cable networks have stopped reporting Live+ Same Day ratings reports one by one over the past few months – opting instead for Live+3, Live+7, Live+30 and multi-platform data.
Now, the broadcasters are expected to follow with FOX the first of the big five to do so. FOX famously would e-mail out its previous night ratings every morning with fast nationals and overnight results – that stops this coming Monday.
