Fox Partly Loses MGM, Gains Relativity

With the reconstituted MGM locking down its new network, Deadline reports that Sony Pictures is looking likely to be taking over international theatrical distribution of MGM’s films from 20th Century Fox.

The decision hasn’t been made just yet, but even if it does go that way the news ain’t all bad for Fox as MGM is apparently looking to let Fox’s Home Entertainment division keep distributing all of MGM’s massive film library on disc.

Fox has reportedly done a very strong job with MGM titles on DVD and Blu-ray since 2006, most notably Fox’s handling of the James Bond back catalogue. Once the deal is in place, I would expect the remaining nine James Bond films that have yet to released on Blu-ray to come out quickly.

Fox Home Entertainment also got a boost today in a press release confirming that it and Relativity Media, LLC have forged a multi-year distribution deal to cover the marketing and distribution of Relativity’s films on DVD and Blu-ray. These will include their upcoming titles like “Limitless,” “Immortals” and their untitled “Snow White” film.
