Though pretty much everyone involved in the first one has been talking about sequel ideas for weeks, it wasn’t until 20th Century Fox’s CinemaCon presentation this morning that they made it official – “Deadpool 2” is coming.
The film will officially see the return of director Tim Miller, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and star Ryan Reynolds. Cable will also be joining him for the sequel.
Fox recently held a press day for the first film’s Blu-ray release where producer Simon Kinberg was asked about the possibility of Spider-Man making an appearance. He responded (laughingly): “I would love to see it. Both of us are close with [Marvel’s] Kevin [Feige], we respect and love Kevin. If it were even remotely possible, we will find a way ’cause we’d would love to see it…I just don’t know if it would be possible.”
Meanwhile Reese says Cable will be the perfect “foil” for Deadpool in the sequel: “There’s a lot of fun in that he’s very serious and he does take on more serious weighty issues than Deadpool’s used to taking on, so I think there’s a juxtaposition there that can be fun. We had a lot of fun with Colossus in the first movie, just by virtue of him being a foil to Deadpool, being a goody two-shoes and a straight shooter and Deadpool being irreverent. And I think Cable offers us the opportunity to provide another really cool, different foil for Deadpool.”
An official date has not yet been set, but it’s likely either October 6th 2017 or more likely January 12th 2018 – slots Fox have set aside for untitled Marvel films.
