20th Century Fox has pre-emptively acquired “Savages” and “The Cartel” author Don Winslow’s upcoming and still untitled crime thriller novel.
Said to be akin to police-corruption films like “Serpico” and “The Departed,” the story follows a corrupt detective in the NYPD’s most elite crime-fighting unit. To stop the city’s racial tensions from exploding, he must reconcile the idealistic guardian he views himself as with the corrupt cop he’s become.
He then finds himself attacked on all sides: Harlem drug gangs, the mob, fellow cops, the mayor’s office, relentless federal investigators and his own personal demons. Winslow has reportedly spent years doing intense research for this book.
Scott Free’s Ridley Scott, Michael Schaefer and Shane Salerno will produce. The same team is also working on an adaptation of “The Cartel” which Scott has been linked as director.
