Four Japanese actors – Hiroyuki Sanada (“Sunshine,” “Lost”), Tadanobu Asano (“Ichi the Killer,” “Mongol”), Rinko Kikuchi (“Babel”) and Kou Shibasaki (“Go,” “Battle Royale”) – have all joined the cast of the Keanu Reeves-led 3D samurai epic “47 Ronin” at Universal Pictures.
The true story centers on a group of 18th century samurai who set out to avenge the death of their master and sacrifice everything to make sure of its success. The tone will mix fantastical elements and battle scenes to deliver a “Gladiator” meets “300” style feel. Ken Watanabe was rumored to be attached to the project, that talk hasn’t panned out.
Sanada will play the clan’s chief samurai, Asano is the treacherous Lord Kira, Kikuchi is the mysterious lady Mizuki, and Shibasaki will play the master’s daughter and the love of Kai’s life, Mika.
Chris Morgan and Hossein Amini penned the script of the Carl Erik Rinsch-directed feature which begins shooting March 14th. Scott Stuber, Pamela Abdy and Eric McLeod are producing and the film is currently scheduled for a November 2012 release.
