Foster’s “Elysium” Role Was For A Man

In a welcome bit of gender swapping, it turns out that Jodie Foster’s villain role in Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming sci-fi tale “Elysium” was originally penned as a male character.

Foster tells EW that she signed on for the film as she was a huge fan of Blomkamp’s previous work “District 9”. Foster says: “I felt it [District 9] was a perfect movie that I wished I’d been a part of. I was just like, ‘Whatever Neill does next, I’ll do.'”

In the film, Foster plays Secretary Delacourt – an anti-immigration and power-hungry woman in charge of the defence of Elysium, an elite satellite hovering above Earth. The wealthy live in luxury onboard, while the rest of the populous is stuck on a poor and polluted planet.

Blomkamp says the role was created initially as a male character named Secretary Rhodes, but Blomkamp then changed it to a woman and Foster’s name was on the list.

Blomkamp says: “I thought, ‘That would be f ing awesome, but there’s just no way. But then, within, like, a day I had a meeting with her and she said, ‘I want to play it.’ I was like, ‘Holy s !'”
