Foster, Ribisi Smuggling “Contraband”

Ben Foster and Giovanni Ribisi are in talks to join the $30 million thriller “Contraband” for Universal Pictures reports Variety.

An English-language remake of Oskar Jonasson’s Icelandic thriller “Reykjavik-Rotterdam”, the plot centers on a security guard and former smuggler (Mark Wahlberg) who is forced back into illicit business by his brother-in-law (Caleb Landry-Jones) who has gotten in over his head smuggling drugs from Panama into the port of New Orleans.

Foster will play Wahlberg’s alcoholic best friend. Ribisi’s role is the enforcer who’s after

the drugs the brother-in-law was bringing into the States.

Aaron Guzikowski (“Prisoners”) is adapting the script while the original film’s producer/star Baltasar Kormakur will direct the remake.

Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are producing. Shooting kicks off in January for a release in March 2012.
